Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. Environmental Health programs tackle issues connecting human health with the environment and include various areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs cover critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical examinations (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a range of birth control methods available. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, with low-cost or free options for families in need. Overseas immunizations are also available by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track vaccination history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to qualifying women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, with specific age and income criteria.
