Idaho's seven health districts work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They address local needs and offer diverse services that may differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. These programs cover areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. Immunization services are offered for routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition, including healthy foods through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, and breastfeeding support. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women, specifically targeting those without insurance that covers these tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall within certain age brackets or health conditions.
