Idaho's seven health districts operate in close partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state agencies. Each district, governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners, is independent of state agencies and focuses on addressing local health requirements. Services offered can differ by district and include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs cover the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health, methamphetamine lab oversight, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunizations are provided for routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for those who cannot pay. Overseas immunizations require appointments, and adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five.
