Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with numerous state and local agencies. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local health requirements by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the environment and include areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illness), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab oversight, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. The Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at little or no cost for those unable to pay, along with overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured women who meet specific income criteria and age requirements.
