Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and food/waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, and public pool regulations. Land Development Programs encompass mortgage surveys, public water systems, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations.
