Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands with a variety of services that can differ across districts. Offerings include community nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs that address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, as well as the surrounding flora and fauna. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools.** Land Development Programs cover: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (Family Planning): Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, and educational resources can be provided for community events upon request. Temporary Medicaid applications for prenatal care are also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for parents unable to pay. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the local health department, which will also bill insurance providers. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps families and doctors track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. Always bring immunization records to appointments. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. Individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials are also included.
