Idaho's seven health districts operate in close partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and various other state and local organizations. Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently of state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness office works alongside the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address issues at the intersection of human health and the physical environment, including community interactions with plants and animals. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition assistance, including healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women up to one year postpartum, non-nursing women up to six months postpartum, infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack health insurance coverage for these tests. Eligibility includes women aged 50-64, women aged 40-49 who haven’t had a pap test in five years or longer, or who have never had one (with priority given), women aged 30-49 with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), women aged 30-39 with cervical cancer symptoms confirmed by a healthcare provider, and women aged 65 or older who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare Part B.
