Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The services offered can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive plan for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersections of human health with the environment and include areas such as day care, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs cover critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services include routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program offers healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these services, meeting specific income and age criteria.
