Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state entities. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands, offering a diverse range of services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development initiatives cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests. Eligibility includes women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 who haven’t had a pap test in five years, younger women with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), and women over 65 who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare Part B.
