Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare as well as other state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners. They cater to local demands by offering a diverse range of services that differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental care, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. Programs include Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness), Food Establishment permits and inspections, Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs encompass Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control options available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. Immunizations are provided by local health departments, including routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods each month, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with dietitians. WIC is available for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five.
