About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-415-5180, and the Swine Flu Hotline is available at 208-415-5299. Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local health needs by offering a range of services that may differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information on available services in your area, contact your local District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the relationship between human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured women who meet specific income and age criteria.
