Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that may differ across districts. These services encompass community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health deal with the intersection of human health, the physical environment, and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. Emergency contraception is also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through health department clinics or occasional off-site clinics. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for necessary vaccines. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps families and healthcare providers track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, offering healthy food monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year; and Children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups.
