Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a variety of services that differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs addressing the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational resources for community presentations upon request. Emergency contraception is also provided. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, which may be low-cost or free for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. For specific vaccines required for travel, contact your local health department. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods via vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, referrals to healthcare providers, and breastfeeding support. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income requirements, and fall into specific age categories.
