Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various other state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. These districts cater to local demands, offering a range of services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. These programs cover areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology for food and waterborne illnesses, Food Establishments (including permits, plan reviews, and inspections), Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development initiatives address Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Subdivision Reviews, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request, and emergency contraception is also offered. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, with low or no costs for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, and support for breastfeeding, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women, particularly those without insurance covering these tests, meeting income criteria, and falling within specific age ranges.
