Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements and offer a variety of services that differ by district, which can include community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs. Many services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the connection between human health and the physical environment, as well as the surrounding ecosystems. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning assistance, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. Emergency contraception is also offered. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through health department clinics or special off-site events. Vaccinations for children are typically low-cost or free for families unable to pay. Travel immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers are responsible for vaccine costs. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative that offers healthy foods via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC is available to pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income requirements, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B eligibility.
