Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or occasionally at special off-site clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements for their destinations. Adult vaccinations for tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: This supplemental Nutrition Program offers healthy foods through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials.
