Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state entities. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services, which can differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the environment and encompass various areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and foodborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (like radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab issues, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives cover critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. The Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Immunization services include routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, with low or no cost for parents unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program supplies nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to uninsured women who meet specific income and age criteria.
