About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-415-5180, and the Swine Flu Hotline is available at 208-415-5299. Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as other state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering diverse services, which may differ among districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information on available services in your area, contact your nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the surrounding ecosystem, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (with cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering various birth control methods. Educational resources and speakers are available for community outreach upon request. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps families and healthcare providers track immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, and breastfeeding support. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these services, meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges or have certain health conditions. Language assistance is available through interpreters. For general information, locations, and appointments, please call.
