Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are contracted through the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **These programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments deliver routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. Vaccinations for children are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your doctor track your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income guidelines, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 with no pap test in the last 5 years or never had one; under 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (clinician approval required); or age 65 or older without Medicare or without Medicare part B.
