Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as other state and local organizations. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services that may differ across districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food safety, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs focus on critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering a variety of birth control methods. Immunizations are available through local health departments, providing low-cost or free childhood vaccinations and adult vaccines. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and individual counseling for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests.
