Idaho comprises seven health districts that work in tandem with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently of state agencies and is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. The services offered can differ by district and include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (including animal bites and foodborne illnesses), Food Establishments (including permits and inspections), Indoor Air Quality (like radon), and more. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and comprehensive physical exams, including screenings for cancer and sexually transmitted diseases, along with a variety of birth control methods. Immunizations for children are provided through local health departments, with low-cost or no-cost options available for those unable to pay, and travel vaccinations can be arranged by appointment. The WIC program supports women, infants, and children with nutritious food, health screenings, and nutrition education.
