Head Start is a national preschool initiative catering to children from families that meet income eligibility criteria. Local nonprofit organizations operate Head Start centers across the country. The program accepts applications for children from prenatal up to five years old. Families must have incomes that fall below the poverty line. Children must turn 3 by September 1 to qualify for the 3-5 program, and those with special needs or at high risk are also eligible. A limited number of over-income children with special needs may be accepted. The program provides assistance with medical, dental, educational, and social service needs at no cost. Documentation required includes income verification, the child's birthdate, and immunization records. Head Start offers supportive services such as social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health education, disability support, dental care, and transportation. The program aims to enrich the lives of children, families, staff, and the community by providing quality education and family-centered services. It serves low-income children from prenatal to five years old, with a structured program for 3-5 year olds that includes 14 hours per week and two meals daily. Parents are encouraged to participate as volunteers, and the program also offers positive parenting classes to support families. Transportation is available, and weekly home visits are provided for children from prenatal to 18 months old, while children aged 18 months to 3 years receive two class days per week along with two home visits each month.
