Idaho's seven health districts collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district, appointed by county commissioners, operates independently from state agencies and caters to local needs with a diverse range of services that differ by district. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the latest information on available services in your area, contact the nearest Health District. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office, focusing on Bioterrorism Planning, partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food, and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. Local health districts provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics for a nominal fee, ensuring no child is denied immunizations. Travel vaccinations are available by appointment at select districts. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their immunization history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. Public Health Preparedness collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts. Satellite offices are located in Cambridge, Council, and New Meadows, and services are available in English and Spanish through interpreters. For general information, locations, and appointments, call the designated number.
