About this resource
The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is 208-234-5888. Idaho's seven health districts operate in partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations, each governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. These districts are independent of any state agency and cater to local demands, offering diverse services that differ by district. Services include community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are facilitated through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the latest information about available services, residents should contact their nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and foodborne illnesses), food establishment inspections, indoor air quality (like radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab oversight, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services are available, offering education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods accessible. Routine childhood vaccinations are provided by local health departments through clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, and individual counseling with registered dietitians, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income guidelines, and age criteria. For general inquiries, locations, and appointment scheduling, individuals should call.
