Head Start (Burley) - Emiliano Zapata

The Seasonal Head Start program is available from May to November, coinciding with the harvesting season. Centers typically function for twelve hours each day, from around 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They offer free transportation for children, along with two meals and two snacks daily, as well as complimentary preventative health, dental, developmental, and speech screenings. The program focuses on education in the primary language, primarily serving migrant children of Hispanic heritage and other migrant families. Head Start is a national preschool initiative designed for children from income-eligible households who have not yet entered kindergarten. Local nonprofit organizations manage these centers across the country. Applications are accepted for children aged 0 to 5 years, particularly for families whose income falls below poverty levels, including those with special needs or high-risk situations. A limited number of over-income children with special needs may also be accepted. The program addresses medical, dental, educational, and social service needs at no cost. Required documentation includes proof of income, the child's birth date, and immunization records. Head Start also provides supportive services such as social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health education, and support for disabilities. It aims to enhance the lives of children, families, staff, and the community, helping families navigate challenges through quality education and family-centered services. The program runs five days a week for 12 hours, providing four meals daily. Parental involvement is encouraged, with opportunities for volunteering and positive parenting classes offered to assist families in education. Services are available in both Spanish and English.
