Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to community-specific needs, offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency service responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings and STD testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine vaccinations for children through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for families who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Travelers should contact their local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for individuals and their families, ensuring they receive only the necessary vaccines when due. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC is available to: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants under one year; and Children under five years.
