Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by providing a variety of services that can differ across districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered via contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersections of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **These programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical examinations (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics held at the health department or occasionally at special locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should check with the local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of your immunizations, ensuring you receive only necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that offers: Monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five years old.
