Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment; travelers should contact the local health department to determine required vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors keep track of immunizations and ensures that only necessary vaccines are received when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food purchases with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five.
