Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements, delivering diverse services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are offered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers keep track of immunizations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative providing healthy foods monthly via vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. It offers individual counseling with registered dietitians and breastfeeding support. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five.
