Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering a range of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services related to family planning, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, and educational materials can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at their facilities or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: This supplemental Nutrition Program provides healthy food each month via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year of age, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack health insurance that covers these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories.
