Each district operates independently, governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They address local health needs, offering a variety of services that differ by district. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a coordinated statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine vaccinations for children during clinics at the health department or at special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Travel vaccinations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these services. Eligibility includes women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 with symptoms but no insurance, and women over 65 who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
