Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They address local demands by offering a variety of services, which can differ from one district to another. Available services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at their clinics or occasionally at special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for families in need. Travel immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their immunization history and ensure they receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative providing healthy foods each month via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups.
