Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering diverse services that can differ between districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a coordinated statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (covering cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are accessible. Educational resources and speakers are available for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. International immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for your travel destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC is available for pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance that covers these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories: ages 50-64, ages 30-49 with symptoms, or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
