Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ among districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers a variety of Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings and STD/HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available, and educational resources can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental nutrition program offering healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC is available for pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
