Idaho's seven health districts collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They cater to local needs, offering a diverse range of services that can differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology, food establishment regulations, indoor air quality, lead health programs, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pool oversight, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, and subdivision reviews. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, while a variety of birth control methods are available. Immunizations are provided for children at low or no cost, with overseas vaccinations available by appointment. Adult vaccines like Td boosters and flu shots may also be offered. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccination history for families and their healthcare providers. The WIC program supports Women, Infants, and Children by providing healthy food, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests.
