Idaho consists of seven health districts that collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state organizations. Each district operates independently and has a health board appointed by county commissioners. They address local needs by offering diverse services that can differ among districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health programs tackle issues connecting human health with the environment, including day care inspections, epidemiology, food establishment regulations, indoor air quality assessments, and solid waste management. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization clinics provide routine childhood vaccinations at low or no cost, and adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccinations for individuals and families. The WIC program supports women, infants, and children by providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers.
