Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the surrounding ecosystem. **Programs in Environmental Health include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers for community presentations can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive only the vaccines you need when necessary. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: Healthy food packages each month redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and showing symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
