Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local demands by offering a diverse range of services, which may differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Travel immunizations are available by appointment, so contact your local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for your destination. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental nutrition program offering healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. Individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials are also available. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women.
