Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This sector addresses the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs consist of: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be requested for community presentations. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through health department clinics or occasional special off-site clinics. These vaccinations are either low cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department for specific vaccine requirements for travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that offers healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old.
