Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) works alongside the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for bioterrorism preparedness and response, as well as other public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the connections between human health and the physical environment, including the community of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which include cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost to parents who are unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about the specific vaccines required for different destinations. Travelers receiving vaccinations from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive the necessary vaccines at the right time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance covering these tests, meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories: ages 50-64, ages 30-49 with symptoms of breast or cervical cancer, or women aged 65 and older who are not eligible for Medicare or do not have Medicare part B.
