Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as other state and local organizations. Each district has its own health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering services that can differ between districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishment inspections, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulation of critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, and sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, with low or no costs for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccination status for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC program supports women, infants, and children by providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests.
