Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ across districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments deliver routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Travelers should contact their local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations and ensures they receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program providing healthy foods through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. Individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials are also available. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
