Idaho comprises seven health districts that closely collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare along with various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently of state agencies and is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. Services offered may differ by district and include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office is dedicated to working with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishment permits, indoor air quality, lead health, meth labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community presentations. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should inquire about necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to qualifying women without insurance that covers these tests, adhering to specific age and income guidelines.
