Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a variety of services that differ across districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (with cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program that provides: Monthly healthy foods through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories.
