Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a variety of services that differ among districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for bioterrorism preparedness and public health emergency responses. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide standard childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families, ensuring they receive necessary vaccines at the right time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community resources, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. It also offers breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available to women without insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and showing symptoms of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older who are NOT eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
