DISTRICT OFFICE: Idaho comprises seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a variety of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information about available services in your area, reach out to the nearest Health District. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that address the connection between human health and the physical environment, as well as the surrounding flora and fauna. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts provide routine childhood vaccinations at their offices or occasionally at special off-site clinics, often at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health district for specific vaccine requirements for their destinations. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry, a confidential and free service, helps individuals and their healthcare providers track vaccination history and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: This program provides supplemental nutrition for Women, Infants, and Children, offering healthy foods through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, healthcare referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five.
