The seven health districts in Idaho collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands, offering a range of services that differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For updated information about local services, individuals should reach out to their nearest Health District. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. These programs cover various areas, such as daycare, epidemiology, food safety, lead health, methamphetamine lab oversight, public swimming pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a wide range of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Local health districts also administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at their offices or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Travel immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should check with local health districts for required vaccines. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps families and healthcare providers track immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. Satellite offices are located in Cambridge, Council, and New Meadows, with language support available through interpreters. For general information, locations, and appointments, please call.
