Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local demands by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism incidents and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs consist of: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide standard childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. Routine vaccinations for children are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn which specific vaccines are required for different destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be provided. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: Healthy foods monthly that can be purchased with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded program providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. This program is available to women who lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64, Age 30-49 without a pap test in five years or longer, or never had a pap test, under 50 with symptoms indicating potential breast cancer (requires clinician's approval), or age 65 or older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
