Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a variety of services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **These programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical examinations (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Travel vaccinations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor track immunizations and ensure you receive the necessary vaccines when due. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information and referrals, individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials.
