Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by offering a range of services that can differ between districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Key Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department for specific vaccination requirements for travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack health insurance for mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and belong to one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test; under 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (requires clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
